Health Risk Assessment
BSDI's Wellness Profile is a powerful, validated HRA/HSA. Developed in collaboration with Dr. David Nieman, FACSM, the
Wellness Profile was validated by an inter-disciplinary team led by Dr. Wei Sha of the University of North Carolina bioinformatics department. It covers
medical conditions, CHD risk factors, basic biometrics, activity, diet, sleep, stress and other lifestyle factors as well as medical system usage. Participants
receive a wellness score based on the Edington risk criteria as well as plenty of feedback on their risk factors.
Health Related Productivity Loss Instrument
The Health-Related Productivity Loss Instrument is integrated into the Wellness Profile and gives you an estimate of the dollar cost of productivity loss.
Unlike earlier presenteeism instruments, the HPLI breaks down your presenteeism and absenteeism stats by medical condition to give you greater insight
into the best path forward for your program.
Motivation offers a surprisingly rich environment for defining your enrollment workflow. In addition to basic demographics, you can collect two
levels of category information (e.g. location and department), a consent form, and a membership "type" useful for the Check-In module. You can ask
participants if they would like to join or are a member of a special group (e.g. joining a walking club, participation in a health screening, etc.).
And you can route participants to the Wellness Profile or a medical screening questionnaire such as the PAR-Q.
The Motivation mobile app lets participants see and record their Daily Challenge as well as tracking their diet, workout and Alliance Points status.
It also makes it easy for participants to communicate with their coach wherever they go.
Consent and Legal
You can count on Motivation to collect and track the consent forms needed for participation. You have full control over the content of your consent form!
Ensure that your participants are ready for exercise with an ACSM or PAR-Q Medical Screening Questionnaire. If you are using
Motivation in conjuntion with an on-site fitness center, this can be a critical component of your onboarding process. It integrates seamlessly
with Motivation's Check-In module as well.
Biometric Data Collection/Integration
Motivation has a broad variety of ways to collect biometric data. We can also integrate with an on-site
organization or program that is collecting biometric data via our integration tools. Our "Master of Change" area
lets participants keep a log of their weight, BMI, bodyfat (with easy calculators), waist girth, cardiovascular
capacity, flexibility, blood pressure and blood panel.
Motivation's Coaching Platform gives your coaches a single online destination for recording and reviewing client
data as well as detailed coaching "templates" to guide coaches through the activities needed for each coaching session.
The Coaching Platform is integrated with the participant interface so that coaches can help participants work through
their personal, exercise, dietary and biometric goals and strategies.
Participants can log exercises and activities on the web or on their mobile device (Alliance Only). The Alliance features a basic log
to quickly log an entire cardio, strength or mixed (e.g. Crossfit, P90X) workout as well as a detailed log for people that
wish to log each exercise. When workouts are logged in detail, we provide a "Best Performances" analysis of speed, pace,
best set and maximal predicted lift. Charts and tables are available as well to track calories and performance over time. The Classic
platform provides a very capable but more traditional exercise log.
The Alliance's diet logging uses the massive Nutritionix® database of foods to make finding the right foods easy.
In contrast with primitive sites that do a basic RMR estimation, the Alliance lets participants do a detailed
"Energy Analysis" to gain a much clearer idea of calories burned. That figure is then used as a reference point for
the foods that they consume. A simple toggle switch lets people compare macronutrient amounts against traditional dietary recommendations
or Paleo-style recommendations.
BSDI has teamed up with the fine chefs at EatingWell® to
bring your participants hundreds of healthy recipes organized by meal, cuisine and eating goals (e.g. low-carb, etc.). Just
scanning through our photographic carousel of meals is enough to inspire people to eat healthier meals! (Alliance only)
In our "Self Awareness" area, the Alliance offers a questionnaire intended to help your participants gain a "big picture" perspective
on their life's journey as well as a day-to-day goals tracking area to help them track their successes and challenges.
This is also where participants can try out BSDI's proprietary "True Age®" questionnaire to see how their
lifestyle impacts their physiological age and aging rate. These questionnaires are also available in Motivation Classic.

BSDI's gamified platform, The Motivation Alliance™, artfully weaves a fun, engaging, and social health gaming
environment with inspiring tools for activity promotion, diet management, stress management,
life planning and biometric tracking. The Alliance features a daily challenge: a health-related task that offers
participants a concrete activity that will help them advance toward their goals. Users can customize their challenge
types and difficulties so that they stay relevant. There are also hundreds of healthy recipes, complete food logging
tools and an activity log organized around the ACSM-recommended 150 minutes per week of exercise.
All of these challenges and tracking tools are wrapped in a game layer that awards points, tracks "level-ups" and awards badges
to recognize personal achievements. Threaded throughout the Alliance are deeply interactive and engaging tools for building
social support. This helps you to build a culture of health in which people are encouraged to work together with their allies
and where the most active participants can "link up" with others to help them grow.
This platform is deeply integrated with a validated Health Risk Assessment, a proven coaching platform and a broad range of
easy-to-use analytical & reporting tools so that your staff can understand and facilitate the progress of each of your participants.
BSDI also offers our Motivation Classic platform: a health promotion system that permits you to customize nearly every detail.
If you want a canvas on which to draw your own program, the Classic system is the platform for you.
Motivation is easily the most comprehensive platform for health promotion on the market. It offers
a rich, interactive interface for your participants as well as a staff-side interface
that provides a wide variety of tools for coaching, data analysis and reporting, and customization.
There are two flavors of Motivation®: The Motivation Alliance® and Motivation Classic. The Alliance
is a gamified platform with a focus on challenges, engagement and fun. Motivation Classic is a
"template" system that gives you the ability to customize a broad range of operational features. If you
want cutting edge Health Promotion, the Alliance is for you. If you want to build your own site, the
Classic is a better fit!
The Motivation Alliance® gives participants a Daily Challenge to keep things fresh and to keep them coming back. Each
challenge builds a skill in one of three areas: Athlete for Life (fitness), Junk Food Averse (diet), and
Self Awareness (stress and life goals). Participants can see and accept their challenges on either the web site
or the mobile app. To see the actual platform, you are welcome to create an account at
our public site.
Each of the areas above - Athlete for Life, Junk Food Averse and Self Awareness - also has a corresponding logging interface
on the Alliance site. Clients can also log and review biometric data in the Master of Change area.
Flexibility has always been a hallmark of BSDI's brand of software. The Motivation Classic offers an extraordinary range
of customizations including the text shown on many of the pages (e.g. Weight Log, Pedometer Log, etc.), the details
of your incentive program, the articles shown in the resource center, and more.
Motivation Classic and Alliance both feature flexible Enrollment Workflow capabilities.
Enrollment is a surprisingly varied art and many web portals struggle to get it right. With Motivation, you have
many options for data collection at enrollment. We support a rich workflow so you can require (or not):
- Participant demographic data including location and categorization (e.g. employee, spouse, etc.)
- A Consent/Release Form
- The Wellness Profile HRA/HSA
- Medical Readiness for Exercise Screening (ACSM)
- PAR-Q Readiness for Exercise
- Membership Selection
- A Physician Consent Form (PCF) for high risk or all enrollees
- A "High-Risk" release form in lieu of a PCF
Enrollment can be done using only visitor-entered data or we can import data from an HR database so that your members need
only "activate" their account (and only people in the database can create accounts). We can also adapt to an HR feed for
employees while still permitting spouses and dependents to enroll under the employee's account.
The Motivation platform also has extremely flexible data querying facilities and a powerful, flexible
bulk email system that lets you target specific populations for customized email messages.
Security in Motivation
BSDI has an extensive and disciplined program for ensuring that the Motivation Web Application and the data entrusted to
BSDI by our clients are protected from unauthorized access, are shielded from attempts to intercept, corrupt or destroy
such data, and are protected against loss from hardware failure and/or natural disaster.
The first aspect of our security stance is the requirement that all interactions with the Motivation web portal take place
through a secure URL. If you have ever seen a small padlock appear when you were visiting a bank's web site, that is the
symbol that the site encrypts the communication between the site and your web browser (seeing "https" in the address line
is another). Motivation uses the same strong encryption as banks to ensure that no one can intercept the data that you are
entering or receiving from Motivation.
Next, the Motivation web technology itself is subjected to periodic security audits. A security audit is simply a sustained
attempt by security professionals to "hack" or otherwise expose inappropriate data from a web site. Motivation
has passed all such audits going back to 2007. Note too that Motivation is used by the Department of Health
and Human services and the security requirements when working with HHS are among the highest in the world. All
of BSDI's staff with access to protected health information undergo an extensive background check and have U.S. Government
