Powerful Remote Database Services
In addition to our Web and Windows product offerings, BSDI also offers full-service online database hosting.
This service is automatically included with Motivation since you'll likely need BSDI to host your site and its
database. However, many people don't realize that we can provide data hosting services even if you are also
(or only) using our Windows products. In this scenario, the Internet just acts as a "pipe" over which the
Fitness Analyst, Check-In or Retention Manager communicates with the database that we host for you.
Besides a Motivation deployment, the most common scenario for using our database hosting services is
an organization has multiple facilities all using our software. If you do run multiple facilities and
you do want to have them share a common database then we strongly suggest that you work with BSDI as your
data hosting provider before going to the trouble and expense of trying to do this yourself. Note that, even
with a common database, you can still keep each facility's data separate for purposes of staff
access, queries and reporting.
The overall architecture of a combined Web/Windows deployment is shown below. Note that the area in blue
corresponds to standard Internet-based web browsing where your clients and staff are accessing Motivation. The
areas in Olive correspond to your physical facilities. The computers within each facility are shown accessing
a Database Server via a network (i.e. the Internet or your internal network).

Note that BSDI does offer HTTPS (SSL Certificate) security for your web site and we can provide VPN access for your
Windows-based terminals. If you would like to use thin-client terminals (e.g. NTAVO terminals or similar) and actually
host the Windows applications on our server using a Remote Desktop Protocol (e.g. Microsoft Terminal Services) application,
we offer that service as well.
BSDI's servers are hosted by MaximumASP at the Peak10 data center in Louisville, KY. Peak10 is one of the largest and most respected
data center providers in the world and brings a world-class network to our customers. The facility provides the latest in
data center design methodologies such as:
- Complete data center redundancy including zoned cooling, power, and fire suppression systems.
- Physical data center security measures including biometric identity verification, zoned access, and 24x7 video monitoring.
- The center also features security glass and reinforced door frames, walls and ceilings at all access points.
- VESDA-based fire detection system and fully isolated fire suppression zones using FE-25 clean agent fire suppression.
- All power to the center is fully conditioned via sophisticated UPS systems backed up by redundant diesel power generators with an Automatic Transfer Switch to supply power even when normal power is lost.
- A fully and redundantly controlled temperature and humidity environment.
The MaximumASP/Peak10 network is engineered to provide a redundant, secure and very high capacity solution to all systems
hosted on the network:
- Complete bandwidth redundancy via multiple OC-12 providers configured to provide burst throughput to OC-48 capacity.
- Complete network device redundancy providing multiple network paths to any destination.
- Enterprise Class routers and switches provide state-of-the-art scalability and management features.
- Enterprise Class Firewalls, Intrusion Protection Systems, and Anti-Virus protect the entire Four Tier network.
- Complete traffic management including: Juniper Enterprise Routers and Foundry Switches, SFLOW network metric data collection on
all internal switching equipment, and a sophisticated set of traffic shaping tools to ensure efficient data flow within the network.
Within this network, BSDI hosts SQL Server databases on two high-capacity, multi-processor servers. Most web sites are hosted on BSDI's
primary, dedicated IIS web server although select customers with large populations under care are hosted on their own dedicated servers.
